Small Hive Beetle Found on the Big Island
The Small Hive Beetle has been detected in Hilo. For more information on this new honeybee pest please click here to download a brochure provided by Dr. Lilia de Guzman from the USDA laboratory in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Beekeepers are encouraged to monitor their hives for this new pest. Adult beetles are fast moving and difficult to catch. The larval form may be the easiest to identify. Please note the comparative differences between the larvae of SHB (below left) and wax moth (below right).
